History & Harmony
Learn gospel history, harmony, and music theory with Aaron Keen and special guest James Story. This class will give students a comprehensive understanding of gospel’s evolution, its core musical elements, and its cultural significance.

Gospel 101 is designed for musicians of all backgrounds who want to deepen their understanding of gospel music and enhance their musicianship. Whether you’re a vocalist, instrumentalist, or simply an admirer of traditional gospel music, this class will equip you with the knowledge and skills to engage with gospel music on a deeper level.
Course Highlights
The Roots of Gospel – We’ll trace gospel’s origins from early spirituals and hymn traditions to its emergence as a powerful musical movement in the 20th century.
Gospel Music Theory Fundamentals – Learn about chord structures, progressions, and harmonic characteristics that define the gospel sound.
Call and Response – Explore the interactive, communal nature of gospel music through rhythmic and melodic patterns
Improvisation & Expression – Develop the skills to embellish melodies, experiment with harmonies, and play with feeling—a key aspect of gospel performance.
Gospel in Modern Music – Discover how gospel has influenced R&B, soul, jazz, and pop, shaping the sounds of artists across genres.
Special Guest: James Story
For one of the four classes, students will have the incredible opportunity to learn from James Story, a highly influential figure in Gallatin’s music education scene and an experienced Gospel musician. With decades of experience in music education, performance, and curriculum development, Mr. Story will share his insights on gospel’s impact in education, community, and modern worship settings.
